We began digging a few trial trenches to ascertain how much of the land should be bought for future excavations. George Delias took the men we had and at the Potters' Quarter for this.
We began two trenches, Trench A north of last year's dig, running N.E. and S.W., and Trench B, southwest of the dig, running in about the same direction. The earth in both was gravelly and red, and full of stones. The sherds were not numerous, but the proportion of lamp fragments, as last year, was large, though mostly Roman.
Trench A
One coin was found at the south edge of the trench, ca. 20cm above the south wall of Grave II and 1.30m below the surface.
(C-1929-137) A skyphos of coarse green clay was found at the south end, 30 cm above the slabs over Grave II, and 1.15m below the surface.
At the same level as the coin was found an Attic(?) vase with thin cross-hatching lines in black on the red clay.
(MF-2528) At this end of the trench were found several fragments of bronze, and rthe bow of a bronze fibula, at a depth of 1.20m below the surface.

(MF-2523) At the north end of the trench was found a male head in terracotta, at a depth of 9.5 cm below the surface.
(MF-2530) Near it was found a small bronze figure of a grotesque animal(?) with a ring under it. (Note: now this object is labelled "Phallus" -K. Petrole, January 2014.)
