Stratum:   Fill: compact fine silty sand of yellowish-brown color. Inclusions of small to medium pebbles with a few small cobbles, many tiles poorly sorted.
Notes:   The purpose of this B is to remove fill N of B 60. No wall was found and it appears that the stratum under B 60 runs under B61. The pickman thinks that there may be a uniform layer under B61. This stratum appears virtually the same as B60 but vitually no plaster is visible. Small and large pick used.
This B contains more tile and a few clods of decomposing mudbrick. A large nearly intact roof tile has been uncovered and much tile is being dig out from against wall 294. These tiles are being saved to see if they can be mended and to weigh them. These tiles do not form a flat destruction layer.
5 chunks of charcoal the size of medium pebbles have been found. It seems that we are coming upon a destruction layer. The director has been notified.
More whitish-yellowish clay-like soil is being found. Again this could be bldg material.
This B has been stopped because we fear that the fill under B 60 does not in fact run under B61. Our initial assumption was wrong. The director feels that B 60 was probably cut to put in what is being called part of the Roman wall, wall 215. The area is to be cleaned. The soil that has already been dug will be sieved. One bag has been set aside for water sieving. This B will be continued under a different B after we are sure that there is no longer a possibility of contamination.
