Stratum:   Pit fill is dark brownish brown sandy silt with 20% cobbles and 20% pebbes, soft and moderately sorted
Notes:   B 7 is the removal of the uppermost fill of the new pit, 2006-01. The soil is fairly soft and for the most part follows the contour of B 6, which occupies the NE portion of the trench, south of Wall 215 and east of Pit 2005-01. Because it is a pit, we are sieving all of the basket as well as reserving approximately one for every five baskets that is sieved, for water-sieving. We located quite a large patch of charcoal/carbon/ash close to Pit 2005-01 and we saved one large chunk and a sherd with charcoal attached to it. To the direct west of the carbon/ash patch and against the edge of Pit 2005-01 is a large chunk of mudbrick, which was photographed. B 7 contained one coin as well as bronze and charcoal. On 28/4/06 as we were removing B 7 we uncovered different layers within the pit. Up against the eastern edge of Pit 2005-01 was a much harder clayish layer. In the middle of B 7, the brownish sandy silt that is quite loose continues. And against walls 289 and 215, in the NE of the pit 2006-01 is a darker soil with carbon mottling. Finally, in the southern area of B 7 is a harder surface that is not the same as the clayish layer against Pit 2005-01. So we have decided to stop B 7 and excavate the clayish layer B 9 since it is higher in elevation and it appears as though B 7 was on top or covered this layer B 9 but also goes underneath it. It is unclear at present if B 7, or at least the continuation of B 7, whatever number we are giving it, goes under the harder, lighter soil that was visible before we began removing B 7. Found a lot of bronze, charcoal, a lot of iron and bone. See pg. 12 for top plan and pg. 13 for photos of mudbrick.
