Name:   NB980 B48 P107
Area:   Panaghia north
Category:   Basket/zembil
Notebook:   980
Context:   48
Page:   107
Date:   2006/06/05
Stratum:   dark brownish brown very soft 5-10% fine-medium pebbles moderately sorted fine sand
Notes:   B48 will remove a softer patch of soil within the area of B47 and is bounded by stones on 2 sides (E and W). The earth here is notably darker much softer and with fewer inclusions than the remainder of B47. This soft earth may berelated to that to the immediate SW of the 2 largearchitectural blocks dug in B32; B48's soft earth clearly continues below the uppermost block. All earth from B48 will be sieved. At an el. Of 91.07 we have come upon the top of the waterpipe running N-S and aligned with Trench 978's pipe. The exposed section of pipe sinks slightly and is cracked; the soft earth here that causes this sinking may be the result of an earlier well's presence. To the immediate W of the pipe is a lone pipe segment that slopes downward wellbelow the bottom el. Of the in situ section. To the S of the lone segment the corner of a large plastered block has appeared. As the soft dark brown earth of B48 may continue down to a far deeper el. (deeper than the pipe cut), we halted this basket after we reached the bottom of the slanting lone pipe segment. We will continue to dig the pipe trench further S in a new basket (B48). The lone pipe segment is nearly intact, missing only most of the projection at its male end. Two large tile frags. Are visible beside the S end of the lone pipe segment.
Top of pipe: 91.07
