Context:   16

Date:   2006/06/02
Stratum:   Fill: light reddish brown silty sand, slightly compacted with 10% sm cobbles
Notes:   This is the excavation of the soil into which B15 was cut. It seems to continue to the W but cannot be continued until the graves are removed. On the N side and continuing under the scarp is a strip of a different soil with tiles and cobbles. A coin was found on the S side just below the surface. Coin: E 412.45, N 975.18, El. 91.83. Phil and Steve took over from Sarah James who was continuing the area on an interim basis. Area for B 16 extended to south and southwest.
Two pick passes made over area before B 16 closed, arbitarily. After morning coffee break we are finishing off B 16 at an even level, leaving a small column/balk of earth at the north where there is a grave. Pieces of painted wall plaster were coming up from the center of the area, red, purple and white colored pieces. Also from the area, roof tiles amounting to roughly 1/2 zembil were found, but not saved. The majority were crude Laconian tiles (probably Roman?) but two Corinthian Classical/Hellenistic pans as well and some pieces of bricks -- ca. 20-25 fragments altogether. We opened B 17 just to the west in order to clean out any contamination from the pit/open area there.
