Stratum:   Light reddish brown compact sandy silt with 30% sm cobbles and tiles. Continuation of fill from B 16-17 accumulated up against walls 290 and 291.
Notes:   Now that we have cleaned the area, we have opened a new basket over this larger area. We are not digging in the notrhwest section of this area while human remains are removed.
6-6-06. Work continues over the same area--the fill varies in ocmposition slightly as patches of roof tiles (mixed types, late-cruder Laconian & higher quality Corinthian tiles) or cobbles emerge. The fill is roughly 10% small cobbles usually, but up to 40% inclusions in one of the tile/cobble patches. The soil is idnetical throughout and it is impossible to isolate the debris patches as separate contexts. After completing the big pick pass and cleaning all remaining earth at the stones of 290 & 291, the soil appears to have substantially fewere includsion and is softer. Some clayey earth is present around E412-413 and N974-976. The top stones of walls 290 and 291 are now completely revealed. We will finish the basket after cleaning.
