Stratum:   Fill accumulated inside walls 290, 291, 294. Weakly compacted brown silty sand, ca. 10% small cobbles, bits of charcoal and lime (rare)
Notes:   After removing the patch of pebbles and tiles along wall 294 (Bask 26) we opened a basket for the whole area, relatively uniform loose fill with debris. Along the walls the fill is noticeably softer, and other gravel patches and tiles are accumulated against it. There is no cut for a foundation trench, but rather the walls must have protected the debris against them from getting as compacted as the rest of the area. We expect a floor level to be several passes lower, based on the area to the south (NB 976, with floors and destruction levels at ca 91.20).
6-9-2006. After completing the first big pick pass, a heavy rain hit the site for a few minutes, soaking everything. The rain stopped soon, fortunately, so we could continue digging. The rain wetted the soil but it was clearly the same fill below, so we took a second big pick pass. During the second pick pass, the soil remained relatively constant. A few pockets of marl appeared on the eastern side of the trench. After the second pass we closed the basket arbitrarily for control of stratigraphy.
