Stratum:   N-S Fill strip from W 215 to castellum drain. Soil is medium whitish brown sandy clay with 20% pebbles, 10% cobbles, extremely loose.
Notes:   B 21 is a strip of fill from W 215 to the cut of the castellum drain. It is softer than the more claylike material running to our surface or floor to the west, and appears bordered by a nicely straight cut to the east. It may be equivalent to the soil which was above, now cutting into the clay surface or floor. In fact, some pottery found seems to match. What appeared to be a nice cut to the east now looks artificial as this soft patch may run under the eastern baulk. We will finish this pass then excavate the baulk. See top plan pg. 39.
