Stratum:   Fill E of W290. Medium brownish brown sandy clay with 20% pebbles, few cobbles, compact.
Notes:   B43 is the excavation of a patch of loose soil to the east of W290 and in the northern area of our trench. It seems similar to the material south of it but there was a cut and now we see a block appearing beneath it. At the south edge of this basket, in the basket above it (b40), there was an ash patch which may or may not be related to the cut. Regarding the block here, we will most likely have to dig to the east to understand better what it might be part of. Just to the west of this block Bill has found a foundation trench for W290. It looks as if (w/o further digging) that there might be another wall running N-S to the east of W290 but off axis. More excavation is needed.
