Stratum:   Ash and rubble fill under hearth. Ash and rubble. Light greyish brown; fine grained soft soil with 15% inclusions, medium to boulder inclusions, poorly sorted. Clayey sand.
Notes:   Basket 26 removed the loose, grey-brown soil with a number of large boulder sized inclusions which were found at the bottom of basket 22 and basket 25. It is unclear if this basket is fill or hearth foundations, however, the soil is loose and contains both ash and clay. Some of the large inclusions included several roof tile fragments, an andesite lower slab hoppper mill stone (common in the Hellenistic period) and a thick, cemented pebble floor fragment. There were a number of other thick floor fragments although not with pebbles still preserved. The nature of this material and the mixing of ash and clay leads us to think that the basket is some sort of fill associated with hearth activity. We closed basket 26 when a soil distinction was observed. In the eastern basket there was very soil filled with rocks and a harder clayey soil in the western basket. The former soil will be excavated in basket 27 and the latter in basket 30. All soil from basket 26 was dry-sieved.
