Title:   Room 7 - Clayey Levelling Fill in SW Section
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   114
Date:   2016/06/14
Stratum:   At top: 10% small rocks and tile fragments; less than 5% pottery; very little bone; some ash but mostly toward the north. At bottom: very ashy throughout; little clay content; increase in pottery.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We began to remove the hard layer of clayey soil as Context 114, think that our "pit" expanded beneath it. It turned out, however, that we were wrong about the pit, and in actuality, an expansive ashy layer lie beneath the top layer of harder, clayey-er soil-- the former apparently cutting into the latter. The boundary between the two, in fact, turned out to be rather diffuse, and we should have changed contexts much earlier after the harder clay had been removed, but the change was quite gradual. The top of this context contained a fair amount of small rocks and tile fragments (~10%), very little bone, and less than 5% pottery. Some ash began to appear first in the northern section of the context, and then increasingly throughout. At the same time, the amount of pottery also increased. At this point the workmen even noted that the material they were then excavating was likely the same deposit as 106 and/or that uncovered by 85 in the north of the room-- and that in any case we were dealing with one extensive ashy deposit spreading across the room. So, after we were already well past the hard clay deposit, Tom and I at this point thoguht we were closing 114-- we even took a bottom elevation (58.24). But then, for reasons unknown (but likely due to miscommunication and/or our own negligence) the workmen continued excavating for another ~10 cm (actual bottom of Context 114 = 58.15). In any case, Context 114 was eventually closed when the workmen came down upon a deposit of reddish soil in the south (as well as potentially different soils in the north-- see drawing below).
[sketch of southern section of Room 7 after the excavation of 114]
After excavating 114, the upper courses of a wall running east to west (indicated earlier by upper courses on the western and eastern sides) were uncovered. We gave this structure a single context number (126), but this wall features two drastically different construction styles: it may be that this "wall" is actually comprised of two separate structures.
Small finds from this context include a piece of lapis lacedaemonius, 16 pieces of glass, an iron nail, and some slag. Rossana pointed out that there has not been any slag found elsewhere within the house, other than here in Room 7 and in Room 6, perhaps pointing to industrial activities in this area of the house.
NA-29: lapis lacedaemonius
NA-40: iron slag
