Notes:   This was a clear, thick, prepared surface of mud/clay with inclusions of caliche/plastering included. It "popped"quite clearly from surfaces above and below.

Cut by Pit 275 at South
Extends where it is not cut, across the entire extent of the section and is clearly evident in scarpt in Trench 3. Thick layer, multiple laminations and lenses, but also clear, flat/level and with distinct boundaries.
Moderate # of artifacts including pottery and fauna determined by Guy (quite disgustedly) to be all 3rd quarter of 12th century.
Have been on lookout for associated cuts/infilling that may be related to the enigmatic boundaries/infill of pit 275. None are evident. The pit does not extend into any of the surfaces identifed.
Context Pottery:   Fineware. slipped plain glazed (1100-1300), bowl. 2 rims. 1 bodysherd. ; Fineware. measles, slipped slip painted sgraffito (1140-1160), bowl. 1 rim.
Period:   Late Byzantine (1059-1210 AD)
