Category:   Deposit

Context:   332
Date:   2016/08/04
Stratum:   5% pebbles. 10% small cobbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish red. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   This is a poorled sorted mass of mixed fill, unconsolidated, and with no clear laminations, surfaces, features, etc. Appears to be undifferentiated fill mass.
Its location and make up lead to the hypothesis that this was a used, open area that predates the formal prepared courtyard surface and consequently may predate the building of the Byzantine houses themselves.
There are some pockets of irregular, eroded, angular cobbles collapsed in all directions which may indicate a chaotic, bioturbated or otherwise informal and disturbed deposition.
No stratigraphic breaks in evidence, dug in arbitrary thick (c. 20 cm) levels to maintain some vertical control.
