Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Excavations began at the western end of the Pink area just east of Floor 961. The context seems to extend up to Cut 847 (bottom of 763). The workmen are moving west to east. At the east they are coming upon a thin layer related to floor 961. Tasos found a small fragment of pebble mosaic ca. 20 cm north of 994. This pebble floor may be similar to 914, just NE of find spot. A few metal objects have turned up: 3 iron nails and 1 metal hook (unknown material). At the end of the day Tasos (barrel man) [sc. barrow man (16 April 2013--DD)] found a coin in the sieve (#27). We left the context open at the end of the day.
9 April 2013: We resume on Tuesday in semi-muddy conditions after losing Monday to rain. At the eastern extent of 1003, a N-S wall in uncovered, which has a darker fill (wall 866). To the W of this a strip of redder fill, and then another N-S wall (1007). Both walls extend N to the robbed out area E and in line with wall 992 and are visible in the scarp there. They will have to be cleaned further before they can be drawn. We also plan to clean the area S of the line of wall 807; some of this is our fill for the end of the railway bridge.
[11 April 2013: This is the continuation of Context 929, the excavation of which was halted along an arbitrary N-S line on 14 June 2012] - DD
