April 12 2013: [We return in the morning to find the context finished. Among the bones a cockerell spur.]-->in error. Not yet finished. (But the cockerelll spur remains)
Large (5-10 cm) pieces of carbonized wood occur especially in the N half of the context, but we are without adequate means of dealing with them; sufficient to note their presence. Also small (~5 cm) pockets of yellowish clay.
Just E of the cut of pit 845, excavation of 1038 uncovers evidence of a destruction layer with tiles, sherds, and cobbles; or better, a deposit -- so far, limited in its extent.
As finished, below 1038 are, from S to N: a strip of softer, darker sediment with tile inclusions, a hard red fill, which wraps around to the E of the destruction deposit.
