Description: | Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes: | We are digging the trench just W. of W5218 because it appears to have been cut into the surface revealed by the removal of #1050 (see notes on 1129 and 1132 for more details). (On top of this possible surface, to the SE, is a small triangle into which we believe the trench that #1130 fills was cut--this triangle is #1132). The soil is clayey-er than the earth of #1129 and much softer/looser than the hard packed soil of the possible surface that #1129 overlays and #1130 is cut into. The deposit includes large chunks of tile and ceramics and a couple of fairly large cobbles which at first appeared worked but actually weren't. We reached a darker, much firmer surface at the bottom of this deposit. The purpose of this trench is unclear--it's too shallow to be a foundation trench. Could it be a robbing trench? If so, what would the relationship between the robbed wall and W5218 be? The inclusions were not particularly enlightening but one coin was found which may prove interesting.
