Area:   Nezi Field
Title:   Rock, tile, and plaster floor east of well 742
Category:   Structure
Notebook:   1107
Context:   1157
Page:   0
Date:   2013/05/29
Stratum:   Tiles, limestone rocks and cobbles (8-20 cm), amphora toe
Description:   The soil color is light yellowish red. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand. Structure materials: large stones (10-20 cm), pottery and tile, with some boulders and cobbles worked in. Material size: 8-40 cm. Material finish: unworked. Material bonding: lime plaster.
Notes:   This context is a uniform surface composed of a thick layer of large, flat, angular limestone rocks and cobbles, pottery (including an amphora toe), and tiles, bound together with hard white plaster.
This was the third or fourth surface in sequence which we excavated in this area (S912, 911, 1153, and possibly 1156). It was well-constructed with plaster, possibly indicating a concern for waterproofing. This would make sense if these floors are to be associated with well 742 to the west.

The removal of the large limestone rocks and cobbles exposed a layer of less densely packed, smaller (3-5 cm) rounded and angular stones, forming the continuation of the deposit that had been unearthed to the southeast by the removal of deposits 1149 and 1150 (i.e. the dump fills in cut 1152). The exception is a narrow strip of very dark, black earth running E-W along the north face of wall 366. This appears to be the continuation of the foundation trench for the wall, previously excavated as context 687. The trench, however, seems to stop about 1.2 m west of robbing trench 888, where there is a seam in the construction of the wall.
This context began to expose the sides of well 758 and the ashlar under tile structure 1158.
