Context:   1176

Stratum:   70% lime plaster; some stones, ceramic, bone
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light greyish red. The soil compaction is stongly cemented. The soil is well sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context is the removal of the remainder of lime pit 886. Rossana and Kate are still uncertain about the definite western edge of the pit, but Thanassis is convinced we have found the western side stopping just east of the cut for the hearth (1173). In either case, the western half is much less well defined than the eastern half, which is a solid, smooth layer of lime. The central swath is a few centimeters higher, and much rougher. Guy speculated these may not be lime pits, but rather bins for a type of press installation, with the rough central area representing a wall in between. The western side is very patchy, with lime mixed into the soil and no clear surface along the horizontal base or vertical sides. Due to this poor preservation, the relative sequencing and general relationships between well 742, hearth 910, and cut for the lime pit 882 are very unclear at this point in time.
We decided to call this a deposit rather than a structure on the assumption that it is a gradual accretion of lime from use of this area as a mixing pit, rather than a built floor for a pressing installation, but both possibilities should be kept in mind.
