Description:   The context shape in plan is rectrangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are mixed. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is vertical sides and flat base. Truncation: Cut 1178 has been truncated at the eastern end by Cut 1163; it therefore lacks its original shape on the east..
Notes:   Cut 1178 is filled by 1170.
While excavating Deposit 1141, we came down on two distinct deposits in the center of the area-- one to the south was a sandy clay with white clay inclusions (1179); the other to the north (1168) was a light reddish brown sandy silt, which was laid against 1178. This line of abutment came to represent the southern extent of cut 1178. We then excavated deposit 1168, which covered the north half of the area, and again came down on two distinct deposits-- one in the center (1170), which was also light reddish brown but with a lighter clay content, was laid against a deposit in the far north that was reddish and more compact. This line of abutment became the north line of our cut 1178. Due to the fact that the deposits to each side of the cut (N & S) were not the same, it is possible that cut 1178 represents a robbing trench for a wall that ran E-W perpendicular to wall 746. The cut extended all the way down to natural/sterile soil. At the south, 2 (maybe 3) plaster floors are visible in the section, cut by 1178. At the north, 1178 cut through at least one plaster floor, visible in section. The cut is bordered at the West by Wall 746, continuing to cut a vertical wall below the foundations of this wall down to sterile. At the east, the original shape and extent of 1178 was later truncated by the large bothros 1163.
