Stratum:   20% tile, pottery, small stones (2-5 cm)
Description:   The soil color is dark greyish black. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context is the removal of the three cut stones forming the well head of well 742 and their black soil matrix, which appears to be the same as 1175. From excavation to the north and east, we could see clearly that these three stones and their surrounding black soil were sitting on a compact red soil which was similar to, if not identical with, the red soil now exposed at the east and west by contexts 1162 and 1180, respectively. By removing the upper part of the structure, we hoped to eliminate potential contamination from the black soil and to clarify the relationship among the three areas of compact red soil.
We could distinguish no traces of use on the stones, which could suggest that this upper course of stones did not make up the wellhead proper.
While removing the three cut stones, we found a few chinking stones (7-10 cm) filling in the gaps between the stones. When the stones had been removed, we came down upon a greyish black soil which may represent the same deposit as context 1175 (which also consists of blackish soil).
We closed the context when we came down upon a course of three rough-hewn stones whose interstices were filled with chinking stones--the same style of masonry as the course we removed above.
