| Notes: | This is a cleaning operation, designed to remove any final traces of limey accretions from the lime pit (cut 882). Thanasis had already removed most of the limey deposit from the cut (we numbered this deposit context 1176), but a few traces of white, apparently limey soil remained visible on the surface after this previous removal. Before excavating further in this area, we thought it would be the best course of action to remove all further traces of this limey fill, in order to prevent contamination with the strata below. Excavation of this area successfully removed this limey deposit, and we came down upon a reddish soil apparently free from all limey accretions. This area seems to belong to the same deposit which surrounds cut 882 to the south and west. This figures, therefore, to be a rather deep deposit, as the cut currently drops approximately 15 cm below the level of the surrounding deposit. We also exposed a circular area of more blackish soil on the north side of the cut, about midway between the cut's eastern and western extent. This blackish deposit is also clearly visible in the scarp to the north. We excavated it next as context 1202. | |
