Description:   The soil color is dark reddish grey. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context represents the fill in a pit west of wall 366. The pit was exposed during the removal of 1183 (the robbing trench fill in C687), and lies at the apparent juncture between cut 687 and N-S wall 306 which continues to the south of the robbing trench. A narrow skin baulk separates this context at the west and north from the area exposed by the removal of context 1187. We left this skin baulk in place during excavation to prevent contamination with the neighboring context.
Excavation revealed a rather large stone (ca. 30 cm width) projecting ca. 15 cm into the pit on the east side, at least one surface of which appears to be cut. Jon speculated that this stone may represent the continuation of wall 366 to the east, which had been mostly robbed out during the creation of robbing trench 687.
This is a rather homogeneous fill not very rich in finds, although a few pieces of metal and glass were found.
