Date:   2007/06/05
Stratum:   Inclusions: 40% medium sized cobbles, 10% small pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. Bottom slope of the context is level down to the The soil color is light brownish white. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   B 208 is the excavation of a possible bothros that is just north of the pit whose cut equals B 71. It seems to have run under or just south of the N-S wall which curves at its northern extent. The cobbles of B 206 sat on top of it. The cut of this bothros seems clear but I am uncertain of the relationship it has to the pit directly south of it. More stones from the curving apse have been exposed by the digging of the bothros.
It now seems that the pit runs under the soil to the south so we will have to take out the patch between the pit (B 71) and this pit in order to continue and follow the cut.
Moreover, it is now clear that what we were digging is the INTERIOR of the curve of the apse and NOT a pit cut.
Since the soil in this basket slopes extensively to the south, I am not certain if it actually is a surface inside the building.
Finds: bone, pottery, coins, button
Post excavation notes: After completing the final week of excavation, we realized that we excavated a number of baskets out of order. B 206 turned out to be part of the apse of the wall. All the baskets excavating the wall and its foundation and cuts should have been excavated before we dug the material in the interior of the building (B 204, 208, and 209). We did not realize this at the time but now understand that what we thought was a pit was the interior of the apse.
