Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. Bottom slope of the context is slight down to the WThe soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   These furrows were defined by careful excavation with the small pick and trowel after the plowzone (B2) above was removed with the big pick.
The furrows run E-W.
The furrows do not go as far N as the property boundary (either the modern fences [B16 and 17] or the E-W wall that lies underneath them). An area of between 1 and 2m was not plowed immediately S of this boundary. This space was used for the piling of unwanted field stones (excavated with B4).
At the S edge of the excavation area there are 3 cuts that look similar to the cuts of furrows but that run N-S and for no greater than 1.2m. I wonder if these are not plow furrows at all, or else, plow furrows from a different phase of plowing.
Dimensions: The cuts of the plow furrows are not uniform - they vary in length from 1.5 m to 8m. Widths vary from 0.04m to 0.35m. Depths vary from 0.01 to 0.10m.
Cut into dark yellowish firm silty sand with 20% inclusions of small to large pebbles (round, subangular and angular), tile frags of various sizes, cobbles and sherds - all poorly sorted.
NOTES TO TOP PLAN:
On the plan I have attempted to give an impression of the depth of the furrows by drawing hash marks more closely to one another as the furrow deepens and further apart as it becomes more shallow. It is not uncommon (especially in the S half of the excavation area) for a furrow to all but disappear, then reappear further to the E or W. This may be due to the total removal of any trace of these cuts at some places during the excavation of B2.
