Stratum:   many tile fragments about 10-20cm, pebbles, cobbles, a few boulders - all of mixed shape 75%
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is very dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 242 covered the entire area north of both the E-W wall and the N-S wall. This included the small area between the east faces of the walls and the east scarp (exposed below contexts 236 and 241).
The soil was consistent across the whole context and was full of pebbles, cobbles, and even a few boulders. Context 242 exposes the reamains of a stone wall in the northeast part of the excavation area that runs N-S. This new wall meets the east end of the E-W wall and runs perpindicular to it. It is roughly aligned with the N-S wall on the other side of the E-W wall. As this new wall extends north we see that a portion of the wall has been removed, just before the wall picks up again at the north scarp of our excavation area. The soil exposed east of this wall is different than that on the west, and both are different than that of Context 242 above.
The removal of Context 242 to the west of the wall reveals a pebbly area that extends all the way across the west part of the excavation area north of the E-W wall.
Along the E-W wall in the southwest part of the area exposed by Context 242 is a small patch of soil with visible cobbles and tiles that is different from the pebbly area around it. We will explore this small area next to determine its relationship to the pebbly fill.
A small marble fragment decorated with an egg-and-dart motif is found, suggesting that Context 242 is part of the dump from the 1960's excavations to the north of our excavation area.
