Stratum:   a light brownish brown soil around the outside; a dark greenish yellow in center of pipe. Many lime inclusions and roots throughout.
Description:   It is mixed- see description. Structure materials: Ceramic. Material finish: n/a. Material construction: n/a. Material bonding: hydroplaster. Features: pipe segments are lightly grooved.
Notes:   The excavation of the water pipe involves several contexts. The cut for the pipe ( ), which we only find south of structure 243; the packing which fills the cut (259); the packing over the pipe (256) near the southern face of the E-W wall of structure 243; the fill over and around the pipe (250) morth of the north face of the E-W wall (=Structure 243); the E-W portion of structure 243 which the pipe cuts (a section of the wall was dismantled, the pipe was laid through over the foundations of the wall, then the wall was rebuilt over the pipe); the cementy fill (254) inside the wall over the pipe-really the same as 250; concrete (25) over the pipe inside the wall. Also, the southernmost extent of the pipe lies not in a cut, but on top of a course of an as yet un-numbered N-S wall.
The understanding now is that the pipe was used to bring water from a source somehwere S/SE of Nezi field to the Giambouranis house. The pipe was laid on top of a low (robbed upper courses?) wall as it reached the southern part of the excavation area. The pipe ran on top of the wall from approx. 1-2 m then it continued north inside a cut until the wall of 243 which it ran through. On the north side of 243 the pipe seems to have been set directly on the surface as there was no cut or packing at this portion. The preserved extent of the pipe ends at the scarp. However, another segment of pipe can be seen in wall 1 of the 'Turkish House' to the north, on line with the preserved portion (see Harris Matrix notes for information about 'Wall 1').
There are 53 sections of pipe preserved, most whole, some partially broken.
The soil inside the pipes in mixed. One is dark greenish yellow and lies in the center of the inside of the pipe. The other is ligh brownish brown and lies around the outside of the inside of the pipe. Both have lime inclusions. The pipe is laid with the male ends lying north, except for the join inside Structure 243, where it is reversed. The joins are plastered on the male flange. Some joins have the plaster coming through to the exterior. The segments vary in length from about 36cm to 30cm. The segments have a thick layer of lime desposit on the inside, and many roots.
