Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We open 348 as a small patch of black clayey fill which overlies softer browner soil to the north and south. It seems that 348 also overlies a N-S robbing trench, although the limits of this trench have not been established (Note, 29-5-08, JR: it seems we may have been wrong here, and that there is no robbing trench in this area, or if there is, it is lower down).
It is hard to tell what the relations are between 348 and the surrounding surfaces, since our repeated scrapings looking for cut lines disturbed the area so much. We can say that 348 is black and the surrounding surfaces are red. Also, 348 is a strip running N-S. These being the circumstances, 348 might be harder fill inside a robbing trench, though this is far from definite.
13/6/2008: Little pottery, storm mixed with 350 and 356.
13/6/2008: This context was definitely not inside a robbing trench.
