Title:   Cobbly fill at E edge of excavations
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1101
Context:   375
Page:   0
Date:   2008/05/29
Stratum:   90% angular cobbles, tile, ceramics, bone
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   we open 375 next to the E baulk as it seems to be the latest of 3 soils in this area of the excavation. To the W is a yellowish clayey layer running S of 311, W of that is a red clay layer. The light reddish brown soil is soft and very full of inclusions like tile, boulders, ceramics and bone.
There is a small patch of soil between pit 292 and wall 299 that is the same as this context so we appropriate the lland into this deposit. The appropriated tract N of pit 292 seems to go underneath wall 299, on the other side of which rests the boney ashy layer (exposed in 2007 and present on both sides of 313. These may be part of a massive peveling operation or two separate ones. If 2 separate - it is most likely 375 that is the earliest. - Of the Boney Ashy Layer (BAL) - in pit B191 - it seems as if the red left along the SE face of 313 runs under the BAL. Therefore - the BAL predates the apsidal building, as it is on both sides of 334 and the floor surface 337 was directly over it in parts. The red then predates the BAL. The floors and fills just S of 347 were part of an operation where the BAL was cut and refilled several times, the last few being floors.
The fill 375 runs up to pit 293 in the S and we remove the edge of it on the E side.
