Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish grey. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | We open 401 to excavate a silty fill. Underneath this fill we hope to find the unseen extent of walls 306 and 366, and thus t define the limits of a room bounded by walls 306, 366, 332 and 365. The N limit if this context is thus arbitrarily decided, even though this silty fill does continues further N. The same is true of the W extent of this context, which we place just far enough W to be able to see the extent of the wall and any possible robbing or foundation trench. In the Ne, N of wall 366, we uncover two large stones in a N-S line possibly part of a wall or some other surface. These stones do not line up with wall 332; they are west of wall 332. Beneath 401, we are coming down on a harder fill all over. Further W, some boulders are uncovered. We pedestal these, evne though it seems doubtful these are part of any structure. (11/62008: It now seems more likely that this might be a wall; see notes of 411 for more details, and top plans of 424 and 425). To the S, we uncover a few more stones of wall 306. We don't, however, find its full extent, or any more stones of wall 366. We also have not found a robbing trench for either wall (though the Director of Excavations thinks we have). To the extreme S, we uncover more of wall 365; we seem to have found the rubble foundation for wall 365, which menas that we will not be finding a usage surface N of this wall. 11/6/2008: pottery is mostly second half of 12th century
