Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | Excavation of context 463 concerns the removal of a compacted, dark brown soil to the W of drain 426. With the removal of context 460 the remnants of what we believe to have been a pebbled floor were revealed to the N of 463. This floor is cut by drain 426. The revealing of the floor uncovered a complicated stratigraphy that we are seeking to sort out. By removing 463 we are looking to ascertain whether part of the leveling fill for the floor or a lower, tile-filled deposit extends in this direction. We have also observed a similar soil to 463 overlaying part of the line of the drain (426) which we will excavate next. If these soils are equal we will have a sense of the layers of deposit in this area. If they are both the same soil then we will have found two deposits that post-date the drain as well as the pebbled floor which it cuts. 463 revealed a blond soil filled with stones and tile fragments on the W end and a black soil on the N which appears to be laid on the blond. Excavations to the E confirmed that this same soil overlaid drain 426 (context 464).
