Stratum:   small and medium sized pebbles, subangular; pottery, mainly small pieces; some tiles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 472 is bordered on the N by the probably extension of wall 366, on the W by wall 306, on the S by wall 365, and on the E by the south part of drain 426 and the W side of cut 431. We swept the area (context 471) before excavating context 472. The purpose of digging this context is to get down to the same elevation as E of cut 431 and reveal the layer with pebbles and pottery that is visible E of cut 431. The soil that we are removing seems to have different inclusions than that E of cut 431: fewer pottery and pebbles. The soil with pottery and pebbles is also visible along the W side of the S part of drain 426. Another goal for digging this is to investigate the N area of this context, which is where the continuation of wall 366 would have been. We want to see if we can find a robbing trench since the stones of the continuation of wall 366 to the W are missing. The excavation of context 469 revealed a harder soil on the line of wall 366 that is different from what lies N and S of it. It is possible that with the excavation of 472 we will be able to see whether the harder soil is a robbing trench or the bedding of the stones of the wall.
The excavation of this context did not proceed as planned. The N half of the context was excavated with a small pick. Only a thin layer of soil was removed and it was noticed that there were small pieces of pottery in it. For the S half of the context a big pick was used. There was no change in the soil color but there was a change in the soil inclusions. In this S half we noticed that there were larger pieces of pottery and tiles.
After digging this context we were not able to find the same layer visible in the E hald of the room, consisting of pebbles and pottery, which was one of the goals in digging this context. However, we noticed that there was no cut for a robbing trench or foundation trench for wall 366. A difference in the soil and a possible cut was observed with the removal of 469. No difference was observed in the soil exposed with the removal of 472.
