Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 476 is located N of wall 366 and E of wall 470. It consists of a mixed soil which ranges from greyish brown to yellowish brown. It is a relatively soft soil and it has lots of inclusions: tiles, pottery, boulders, bones, and some ash in places. We think that it is a dumped fill and even though we could see different patches of soil we were not able to define their boundaries and take them out separately. However, we could see a difference between this mixed soil with many inclusions and a harder, redder soil with less inclusions in it. For these reasons we decided to remove the mixed soil as 476.
We removed what we think was a distinct layer of soil but the stratigraphy in the area is still very confusing. Approximately in the center of the context we found a darker, soft soil. Around the borders of the context it seems that we have patches of a more compact, redder soil. On the SW corner we have soft dark soil with many inclusions. We are not able to identify the relationships between these different soils. We close this context, even though we did not succeed in our goal of clarifying the stratigraphy in the area. Our next step is to excavate E of this context, hoping to get a clearer picture.
