Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 485 is the excavation of the pit fill of pit - cut 486, identified just north of C272 (appr. E. 258.75). This pit was revealed with the excavation of context 484. Initially we thought that 484 would be the excavation of the pit but it revealed two pits; a smaller one (cut 486) within a larger one. The smaller pit is cut in the larger pit and therefore is later; it will be excavated first.
It should be noted that this pit and the larger one would explain why drain 426 doesn't continue further north after C272.
The soil in pit-cut 486 has a lighter color than the larger pit and it is looser. The pit was cut in the 19th c. with the construction of the boundary wall that has been removed with C272. During the excavation of the pit fill we noticed that this pit seems to go deeper that the larger pit. On the norther side of C486 we can see the cut the earlier pit and the depth of its fill. The dating of this pit will give us a terminus ante quem for the destruction of drain 426.
Also as the excavation of the pit proceeded we noticed that we were finding more and larger pieces of tiles as well as some medium size pieces of limestone.
While digging the pit fill Kostas noticed a soil change - the soil became lighter and it included charcoal and lime. We thought that we might have reached the end of the pit and we continued cleaning. We realized that we overdug and that the pit seems to go deeper. We closed this context and we will continue removing the pit fill with context 487.
After discussing with Kostas we think that we actually reached the bottom of the pit (86.34) at the souther side and we overdug (86.27) at the northern side. We closed this clontext and the excavation of the pit.
