Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark pinkish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 500 is the excavation of the second from the top fill of pit 501. The pit is located west of wall 306 and north of the tile collapse noth of wall 365.
This context differs in color form the context above 499; it is also noted that the context contains a lot more clay than 499. During the process of excavation it has not been easy to identify the walls of the pit. On the south side there is a clear cut and the soil making the wall is harder. On the north side the cut seems to go underneath the top of the cut.
5 May 2009
We continued this morning the excavation of context 500. While digging we were able to trace again the cut of the pit toward the north side. It seems that the cut continues down vertically and does not go underneath the surface where the pit is cut into. We think that the area where the pit is cut into is very soft and this is the reason we had problems identifying the walls of the pit.
While digging we uncovered large cobbles and bolders which were removed. Underneath the stones, Kostas came upon a hard surface - bedrock or colluvium. This hard surface is also visible on the lower part of the walls of the pit - about 15 cm from the bottom. It seems that while digging this pit they dug in the bedrock before stopping. This might be a garbage pit or an effort to make a well which was abandoned.
