Stratum:   Soft greyish brown sandy silt with 50% inclusions (esp. large stones, some sherds, broken tiles, and smaller stones).
Description:   Top slope of the context is steep down to the E. Bottom slope of the context is steep down to the EThe soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are following the cut of the pit, which cuts everything else that we can see. A lot of large stones came out of this context, whereas there were none in neighboring B 5028. The cut of the pit cuts an ashy layer to the west, and several differentiated layers to the north (for differentiation, see plan to B 5028).
We are dry sieving 50% of the soil because we see Byzantine sherds coming out. We are keeping the bones.
It is beginning to become apparent that another bothros, as yet unexcavated, lying NNW of Bothros 7, may have cut Bothros 7. We are cleaning B 5029 to determine if this is the case. If there is another bothros N of Bothros 7, and if it cuts Bothros 7, we will excavate the cut of that bothros next. This will involve the area excavated earlier today and yesterday in B 5027.
The fact that stones are present in most of the cut of Bothros 7 but not in the NNW section suggests to us that another pit, NNW of Bothros 7, cut Bothros 7. The presence of ashy soil in the area of the NNW bothros supports this. The NNW bothros, put in later than Bothros 7, was not filled in with stones as was Bothros 7. The NNW bothros appears not to be as deep as Bothros 7, because there is a layer of blackish soil making up the fill of the pit, but red soil under it appears at an elevation falling inside the fill of Bothros 7.
