Stratum:   30% small - large pebbles, of carbon and mortar
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish pink. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Levelling fill deposit 503 coordinates with the fills 502, 387 and 389 as levelling deposit for the clay floor 379 associated with walls 306, 365, 205 and 332. This deposit spans the entire area confined by these walls except the center where a hump pf rootile debris from a lower stratum is visible. It is imagined that this hump of the fill represents a deposit similar to the layer of collapsed rooftile to the west of wall 306 and north of wall 365. It is expected that the removal of levelling fill deposit 503 will reveal the extent of the rooftile deposit beneath.
Unlike what we expected, the excavation of 503 presented a different situation. More large fragments and whole rooftiles were uncovered at a lower elevation around the hump of rooftiles that was visible after the excavation of 387 and 389. However on the east and west we did not find the same deposit. On the west we exposed a compacted soil with small fragments of flat lying rooftiles. On the east we exposed a very soft soil with small fragments of flat lying rooftiles. It should also be noted that on top of the large pieces and whole rooftiles we exposed cobbles that might have been used to hold the rooftiles inplace before they collapsed. Another problem is that we are digging below the line of the foundation course for walls 365 and 332. There are two possible interpretations about the rooftile deposit in the room:
1) we have a dumped fill, not associated with a floor, nor with any collapse that happened in this room. After the tiles were dumped in the room, more soil was added to level the room and built a floor on top. This would explain the foundation course visible on walls 365 and 332.
2) this is a collapsed rooftile deposit, based on the size of rooftiles and rocks on top of them. Walls 365 and 332 are later additions. A floor/surface should be underneath this deposit.
