Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark pinkish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Pit fill 512 is the first pit fill from top of the pit cut 513, underneath the slumped deposit 511. The pit is located in the room bounded by walls 313 and 332 and was cut at a later point by the pit cut 510.
While digging the pit fill deposit context 512, a complete horse cranium discovered leaning against the west wall of the cut, roughly at the central point of the N/S axis of the pit. We were unsure if the pit might in fact be a horse burial, so we left the skull in situ as we proceded with the excavation of te pit fil until it became clear the there was no articulated skeleton in the fill. We discover just south of the horse skull 4 articulated sheep/goat lumbar vertebrae, with the sacrum and innominate also articulated (T.Webb).
In the north-eastern coner, the pit fill deposit 513 abutted a mudbrick deposit; it appears that the redeposited mudbrick is the fill of a larger pit and it is cut by the pit cut 513 which pit fill deposit 512 fills. At this point there appears to be a large figure 8 pit cut. It is possible the northern extent of the large pit is either coincident with the pit cut 510 or truncated by it. The dimension of the pit and its inclusion (horse head) indicate that this was a garbage pit and was not an effot to dig a well. This suggests that the pit cut 510 is the cut that truncated the limestone block in the northwestern extent of the pit, which may have been an effort to sink a well, rather than the garbage pit filled by deposit 512. The removal of the pit fill 512 revealed the bottom of the pit at a soil change: the deposit below contains many carbon inclusions and appears to be a further southward extent of the bottom of the pit cut 510.
