Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark brownish red. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   A hard red soil was reached throughout almost all of Room E, E of the drain.
The soil is probably a dump of earth used at some point to level the room for building a wall or some such construction purpose. It is not well sorted and has a wide range of stones. For the most part, the soil being reached in the first pass appears to me to be identical to that being removed. Moreover, it appears to be the same as that in the bottom of the small pit, because there are some large clay patches. This would imply a very deep fill.
In the NE corner, the soil removed is looser and more brown -- possibly a foundation trench. Along W26, a block edge was revealed to the E of one revealed in 5184. It too goes under W26 and clearly belongs to an earlier wall phase. The block to the S, going under W16 to the E, means that we have the corner of an earlier wall phase matching the later corner made by the later phases of W26 and W16. The the S of the block that goes under W16, no more of the earlier phase is preserved but said block may line up with a block in the SE corner. We think that the phases are: earlier walls built; some of earlier E wall robbed out; filling/leveling put in (which we are currently digging); later walls built.
No foundation trench found along drain. Sometimes the soil along it is grayer but this is probably due to the disintegration of cement. The drain walls were probably laid from the inside of the drain -- that is, it is not odd that there is no foundation trench to be found.
In the SW corner, a small portion of a mudbrick wall was revealed, about 0.80 m long and max width 0.40, thicker bythe drain and about parallel with W29. It seems to be cut by the drain wall.
At the end of this pass, the digger told us that he could draw a distinction between the soil reached in the center-north (more stones, more wall plaster, and whiter) and the slightly darker soil in the S that has fewer inclusions.
