Description:   The context shape in plan is rectrangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: by a pit in NW of Room E (5012).
Notes:   A deep cut to the S of W26. To the E it is terminated by a large ashlar. Along the N it is terminated by a pink-red rock. To the W it is cut by the drain wall. The southern face of the cut is more irregular, bending in slightly near the middle and bulging out at the east end. The latter may point more to a robbing trench than a foundation trench as more room was needed for removing one of the large ashlars at this end of the early wall. Alternatively, more room may have been needed for the laying of the large ashlars.
The soil within the cut was relatively dark and loose, mixed. No wall plaster found in the far west.
The floor of the cut is lower than the floor of the later pit (5012).
The regularity of the cut points more to a foundation trench than a robbing trench.
