Context:   5258

Stratum:   50% fine pebbles to large rocks, potter, bone, tile
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This soil was only slightly darker than the brown deposit 5253 which makes the borders diffuse. The deposit was mixed in its composition with stones of various sizes.
Although the soil color of this context is classified differently than that of 5252, the debris fill which abutts it to the south, there is very little about this context apart from the lack of color variation to differentiate the two contexts. Both contexts contained the same sorts of amounts of inclusions and of particular note is the pig jaw bone which lay half in one context and half in the other. Another possible difference between this context and 5252 is that the pebble floor found under 5252 was only partly immediately touching 5258 at its north end. On the south half of this context (5258), a blackisk brown layer was found immediately beneath it, but this new context may overlie or cut the pebble floor. Removal of this context did not bring the north end of the martyr down to the level of the 1961 excavations in the courtyard (which lie 5-10 cm below the bottom of this context on the north).
