Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NW. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are excavating a pit north of Wall 5216. The soil of this deposit is considerably darker than its surronding soil, which is more clayey to the east and harder and more compact to the west. The soft soil appears to overlie the deposit of harder soil and claylike dirt. We have found a piece of bronze that may be a coin, but its roundness is flawed. We are turning up many corroded pieces of bronze and iron slag. We follow the soft soil to the corner of Walls 5216 and 5218, to the southeast. We are coming down to a harder layer, which stretches E-W along Wall 5216. We have found a limestome architectural feature next to the claylike patch, on its west side. It may have plaster on it. Now, the soft soil seems to go under the harder soil surrounding it. We stop here.
Revised Interpretations: After the context has been dug, it can be seen that this was a lens of fill and most likely does not fill a cut. The metal identified as slag may be road metal.
