Context:   5309

Stratum:   20% tile fragments, ceramic, bone, pebbles (medium to large)
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We dug this deposit because it appeared to be resting on top of the tile and cobble floor, which we are working to identify throughout the courtyard. There was a very hard crust on this deposit from constant wheel-barrow and foot traffic in this area, but the majority of the deposit consisted of only firmly compacted soil. The interpretation of this deposit is problematic.
On its western end, the deposit was approximately 10cm thick and here we came down on a clayey softer layer beneath. The only evidence we may have found to suggest the continuation of the tile and cobble floor here were a handful of tile fragments, which lacked a clear surface associated with them. Thus, if the tile floor did exist in this area, it was badly worn or disturbed. Alternatively, the deposit may itself be the tile and cobble floor in a bad state of preservation, but the problem arises that this deposit is naturally raised from the floor areas to the south (5324) and north (5332). It is possible that there is a cut here, which continues the cut filled by 5289. For, under 5289, we came upon what appears to be a drainage channel, which continues under this context and towards the well. This too is problematic because 5289 was clearly bounded on the west by a red layer that is a continuation of 5293 (prematurely excavated), which also seems to run under our present context. On the eastern end of this context, under only 1-2 cm of soil, we found traces of a hard, packed surface that seems to be related to a similar hard packed surface around the north and west sides of the 1961 exploratory pit (5327). In fact, we may have accidentally removed a small part of this floor surface (i.e. 5237) while excavating the current deposit.
