Stratum:   25% pebbles (various), ceramic bone
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is mixed. The soil compaction is very hard. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context represents removal of what is most likely a floor, which lies partly under the former area of the martyr, but also extends westward towards the well. It seems also to lie partly under the northern-most part of the tile and cobble floor (5324) removed in the southwestern part of the courtyard. On the surface of this context, there was a scattering of pebbles, but not enough to be considered a pebble floor like 5291. Additionally, it was much thicker than the patch of pebble floor that we excavated in the northeast corner (i.e. 5291). In most places, it flaked off the layer beneath in 2-5 cm thick chunks. This flaking occurred most frequently along the western and northern end of the pit (dug in the corner of the courtyard in the 1961 excavation).
Before excavating this context, we sprayed lightly with water and this revealed two differing colors on what was visibly the same floor. To the north, the soil was light whitish grey, while to the south, it was light bluish grey with flecks of black. We decided that this discolorization to the south was due to the presence of ash or some root action immediately below this part of the floor, which over time seeped into the originally whitish grey soil. When we excavated this context, this assumption was confirmed by the discovery of a think dark blackish brown lens and roots under the south half of the floor. In the northwest, the area of this context which lie partly under the tile and cobble floor 5324, the soil below our present context was softer light brownish red soil (this might be the same context as 5293, the soil is similar), while in the northeast, we encountered another hard, compact area, which may be another floor or merely soil hardened by almost 50 years of exposure to sun and rain because of the 1961 pit.
It seems likely that this floor is earlier than the tile and cobble floor, although it simply disappears on the west where there is now a thick layer of sub-floor material from the tile and cobble floor, while on the east, this floor has been cut by the 1961 exploratory pit. To the north was the fill in the cut (5288, 5289) that revealed possibly a stone-lined drain leading to the well. Therefore, it was difficult to conclude much more than that we have roughly 3 square meters of floor, which touches the south wall for an extend of 0.40m. Otherwise, the only find of note was a bronze ball on a broken rod.
Revise interpretation (24/4/08): Reconsideration of the silting deposit 5315 which lay between this floor and the tile and cobble floor (5324) and formed a continuous surface between the two tentatively suggest some relationship between the two floors which may have occupied different halves of the courtyard at the same time, even though a small part of the floor (5327) seems to go under part of the tile and cobble floor (5324) The silting deposit that formed between the two, touching and slightly overlapping the edges of each, could only have formed if both floors were present at the same time. See notes on 5315 on the further details.
