Date:   2008/05/05
Description:   Structure materials: limestone, rough cut. Material size: 0.33 m W x 0.25 m H x 0.30 L l. Material finish: roughly hewn. Material construction: rough face, random, uncoursed. Material bonding: if binding, eroded/none present. Features: three stones sitting on a rubble foundation trench.
Notes:   The rough-cut blocks have been exposed in a N-S running orientation; other stones/blocks would have been placed between the three blocks that currently exist and the E-W running wall to the S (1039.40 N). Also, in the notebooks from 1961 (NB 230/235) and from the general site plan (Travlos 1961), there appear to be large stones that abut the E-W running wall to the south (in fact, there is an excellent chance that the large pierced block that sits atop the E-W running wall (1038.75 N and 262 .75 E is the current location of this block) was removed from the course when it became unstable during the 1961 excavation). The general site plan that Guy provided us is without a date, but shows definitively structure 5353 abutting the E-W running wall. Guy also found the 1961 wall number for the E-W running wall (#58) in the final report written by Steven Lattimore, June 24, 1961 for Section G. Notebook 230, p. 157, notes that the 3-stone wall is #64.
The reason that we are removing 5353 is that at some point in the 1961 excavations or after, the deposits on both sides (E and W) of 5353 were dug out. What remains can best be described as a pedestal of earth supporting the remaining three blocks of 5353. This pedestal is either a baulk left by earlier excavations or the rubble foundation that supported 5353. Our next step will be to excavate this pedestal to determine its relationship with 5353. Also, there were two other rough-cut blocks removed that appeared to have fallen from the pedestal.
