Notes:   We opened a cleaning context on what appeared to be a small pile of architectural debris - subangular and subrounded boulders and cobbles pedestaled on an approximately 0.50 m layer of dirt, mortar possibly eroded or completely fugitive. We wanted to clean away loose layers of dirt in order to discern whether there was a true wall beneath, or whether we were just dealing with wall spill/architectural debris. Once loose dirt was brushed away, it became cleas that we are dealing with a structure of some kind, however ephemeral. The stones exposed on top are close together and run in a line; the 1961 mao of this area's features also preserve this as a wall, suggesting that perhaps this structure was better preserved when it was first revealed.
The structure as it is sits now overlies a very large (c. 4 m.) pit full of ashy fill - the same fill that cuts into layers of fill including a robbing trench, a walll, and a layer of tile to the W. Thus, this small wall will need to be excavated before we can proceed to investigate the ashy pit. We drew a N-facing section of the pit for reference.
(8-5-08): The wall cleaned in this context was given a structure context number of 5375. It is drawn, but not numbered, on both the 1961 and pre-1960s site plan.
