Notes: | This section of wall running E-W abuts a wall running N-S (5394) and runs parallel to another wall to the S (5376), about 1 m away, doing likewise; it was cleaned in context 5372 and was deemed, with suspicion, to be a wall. The goal in excavating it is to understand its construction and how that related to the layer of ash underlying it. It is likely that this structure as it survives now preserves only foundations. Upon excavating the stones on top of this context, it became clear that they rest in a layer of loose, grainy humus. We quickly revealed a harder more clayey layer beneath that formed the bottom of our context. This was distinguished by its texture moreso than its color. The inclusions were, of course, significantly different, since the presence of boulders, cobbles, and tiles ceased. | |
