Stratum:   Tile. Fine pebbles to cobbles. All shapes and sizes.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We start excavating this deposit from the North East because whil the soil there is similar to that surrounding it, it is slightly more pebbly and has less tile inclusions. We therefore want to discern, despite the diffuseness of transition, whethe we should treat this soil as a discrete context to avoid contamination. Yet, right away, we expose tiles/cobbles beneath, and we believe that the soft soil stretching from the floors meeting at the corner of Walls 6284 and 5285 to the south is consistent and represents the same action or event. Further south, along Wall 5285, the scarp of the firmer soil of higher elevation seems to reveal a clay (floor?) layer. The number of tiles and cobbles is immense.
This, like the fill above it, could be fackfill from the 1960s excavation, since maps for these excavations show that activity occurred in this room, and the room to the north is filled entirely with modern backfill. We have encountered many pieces of threshing churt. Further brushing exposes the clay layer in the scarp along Wall 5284.
We resume excavating this context the following day. We perceive a distinction between soft pebbly and tiled soil at the north, just wouth of Wall 5285, and firmer soil to the south. The soft north soil is filed with churt fragements, and it lies on and against the firmer soil to the south. This will be taken next as 5389.
Significant: It is subsequently verified that this is backfill from the 1960s excavations!!!
