Context:   5398

Stratum:   5% inclusions: small fragments of pottery (less 3cm), charcoal
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is well sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   We excavated this distinct deposit first identified upon removal of wall 5376. Our pickman Thanasis sees a slight difference in ash at the bottom this deposit (5398) and suggests we close 5376 and so we do. What appears at the bottom of 5398 is more ash but this context underneath 5398 has the shape of a pit cut that is filled by ash. Although it is out of stratigraphic order, we feel the edge of this potential pit may better defined by first removing the reddish charcoal layer (5399). At least it appears oin this case that we have a distinct ash deposit separate from the huge ash deposits we are detecting throughout the trench. The bottom of 5398 revealed some small cobbles which seems to form a ring that may define a pit cut filled with extremely soft soil
After more discussion with Thanasis and amongst ourselves, it appears that we have two different deposits of ash and we are unsure of their relationship. The two ash deposits are 5398 and the possible pit cut and ash fill beneath 5398. This relationship between these two ash deposits, however, is difficult to determine because the 1960's excavation dug through part of it and the possible pit cut beneath 5398 is unexcavated. We have decided, that for now, we will treat 5398 as a deposit and not the fill of a cut, and we have expressed this observation in our relevant Harris matrices.
