Corinth Basket: Nezi Field, context 5477
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Nezi Field, context 5477
Area:   Nezi Field
Context Type:   Fill
Title:   Fill over Floor
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5477
Page:   0
Date:   2008/05/13
Stratum:   30%: roof tile, pebbles (small to large, angular and subround tabular mixed).
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SE. The soil color is dark pinkish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 5477 is a lens of dumped fill revealed by the removal of another lens of dumped fill characterized by the density of roof tile fragments (5472). The deposit extends from Wall 5411 to Wall 5216 from North to South and from the cut of the foundation trench for the N-S Wall 5284 to the Turkish Wall (5217 currently) from East to West. The south-west portion of the deposit has been removed during previous excavations (1960s ) and the center is cut by Bothros 18 (NB 254, p. 195 ), which has been identified as a Turkish pit. Removal of the fill deposit 5477 reveals another course of the E-W Wall 5411 at a lower elevation than was previously visible. It also reveals the continuaton of the earth floor uncovered at the bottom of the foundation trench for the N-S Wall 5284 (dep 5466; cut 5471). This floor extends to the East edge of the cut for Bothros 18. It also appears to be the layer at which excavation in the 1960s ended, as the removal of the deposit 5477 has eliminated the scarp from those excavations (with the exception of the pit Bothros 18).
Bead deposit: 264.02 E, 1027.15 N, 84.31 el.
We encountered a deposit of glass necklace beads mixed in the soil. We took the soil in which they were discerned to the museum for meticulous sieving.
14/5/08: As we proceed west, we encounter more beads and bead filled dirt that we have taken to the museum. Directly west of this, we find an iron sickle at 263.16-29E, 1026.95-1027.11N, and 84.31-2 el. It is photographed in situ. Directly west of that, we find a partially intact beaker filled with soil. We prepare it for photographing in situ, with the soil still in its cavity. Directly west of the pot, we find three articulated animal vertebrae. Along the south face of Wall 5411, we expose a black, ashy earthen surface, although the soil directly aligning the wall is less compact and the surface may not actually abut the wall. A half coins is found at 263.14 E, 1026.53 W, 84.33 el. This coin is 2008-118. Just north of where the half coin is found, south of our pot, we expose another iron implement.
Also, coin 117 from sieve.
Although the deposit 5477 continues right up to the Turkish wall (5271) uninterrupted, it is decided to leave a martyr of approx. 0.15 m . This ia because the wall abutting the deposit has been interpreted as a \turkish feature, which may contain later material than the fill deposit 5477. The matyr will be excavated as deposit context 5495.
