Title:   Martyr Fill along Turkish Wall
Category:   Deposit

Context:   5495

Date:   2008/05/14
Stratum:   20% inclusions: pebbles small-large (angular, tabular and sub-rounded)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark pinkish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This soil is the same as that for deposit 5477, but we have left it up as a martyr along Turkish House Wall 5217 to prevent contamination of 5477. We are also digging beneath 1960s excavation backfill, and since the 1960s excavations apparently excavated this room as they were chasing the wall of the Turkish House and Bothros 18, we left this martyr as a precautionary measure. The martyr is located directly east of the sickle we found in situ in its northern portion, and it extends south from there.
The earth floor revealed at the bottom of 5477 continues right up to the wall as the removal of the martyr reveals. This is because Turkish walls normally do not have foundation trenches.
We exposed an iron knife just south east of the axe blade previously found. We did not take a full sample for water sieving, but we took a small portion to run through water flotation on site (approx. 2 liters). Thw sample was water sieved on site in order to look for carbonized botanicals. Though flecks or carbon were noted in the residue, no seeds were apparent; we decided not to reserve a 10 L sample for water sieving.
